Anglo American plc announces that Fred Phaswana, a non-executive director, has requested to step down from the Board in order to take up his new role as Chairman of the Standard Bank Group in due course. Mr Phaswana will continue to serve on the Board until 1 January 2010.

Mr Phaswana will remain as Chairman of Anglo Platinum but has also indicated his intention to step down from that position in due course.

Sir John Parker, Chairman of Anglo American, said: “On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Fred for his valuable contribution to Anglo American over the last seven years. Fred brought a wealth of expertise and experience to the Board and we wish him every success in his new role as Chairman of Standard Bank.”
